E-commerce in the GCC has matured rapidly. Shoppers are confident buying online, but they are also demanding: they expect fast delivery, familiar payment options and a seamless mobile experience. When any of these is missing, they leave — often at the final step.
Checkout abandonment is rarely about one big problem. It is usually the sum of small frictions. Here are the fixes that most consistently improve completion rates for our clients.
Offer the payment methods shoppers expect
Card payments are essential, but they are no longer enough. Digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay reduce typing on mobile, and buy-now-pay-later services like Tabby and Tamara have become a deciding factor for many customers on higher-value orders.
- Display available payment methods early — on product and cart pages
- Enable express wallets for one-tap checkout
- Show instalment amounts clearly where BNPL is available
- Consider cash on delivery where your margins and operations allow
Be explicit about delivery
Uncertainty about delivery cost or timing is one of the most common reasons shoppers abandon. Show estimated delivery dates and costs before checkout, offer express options in major cities, and make returns policies easy to find.
Quick win: add a delivery-date estimate on product pages based on the shopper’s emirate or city. It sets expectations and builds urgency.
Simplify the form
Every field you remove makes checkout easier. Allow guest checkout, use address autocomplete, support Arabic input, and avoid forcing account creation before purchase. On mobile, use the right keyboard types for phone numbers and emails.
Build trust at every step
New customers need reassurance. Show security badges where they matter, display recognisable payment logos, highlight genuine reviews, and make customer service visible — WhatsApp support is especially reassuring for GCC shoppers.
Shoppers do not abandon checkouts because they stopped wanting the product. They abandon because something made them hesitate.
Localise the experience
A fully bilingual store with correct right-to-left layout, prices in local currency and VAT-inclusive totals feels trustworthy and familiar. Mixed-language checkouts or unexpected currency conversions erode confidence at the worst possible moment.
Recover the carts you still lose
Even the best checkout will lose some shoppers. Consent-based recovery emails and WhatsApp reminders, sent within hours rather than days, bring a meaningful share back. Keep messages helpful rather than pushy, and test incentives carefully to protect margins.
Test, measure, repeat
Use analytics funnels and session recordings to see exactly where shoppers drop off. Prioritise fixes by impact, test them properly, and measure success by revenue per visitor — not just conversion rate.
Small improvements compound. A few percentage points of extra checkout completion can be worth more than a significant increase in advertising spend — and every customer you convert is one you can bring back again.
